The proper way to run

Lee Phillips — December 8, 2011
that all those people getting injuries from running are landing on their heels. This is encouraged by the wedge-shaped, highly padded design of modern running shoes. When I was a lad in New York the sneaker of choice was the Converse All Star, which is a simple, flat, canvas shoe with a thin rubber sole. Everyone knew that the proper way to run was to land on the front of the foot. Now this esoteric knowledge is being rediscovered as a miraculous way to actually be able to run without hurting yourself.

Do people actually run on their heels? Maybe they’re really just jogging. I’ve noticed that many people call jogging “running,” even if they’re barely moving.

The most interesting part of the article is the account of how shoe companies insist on only positive reviews of their products in running magazines. The magazines depend on shoe advertising, so they comply. The mystery here is: who even bothers to read reviews of products in magazines that advertise those same products? The same people who are running around on their heels and purchasing expensive sneakers in a vain attempt to fix the resulting injuries, I suppose.
