iOS 4.3 May Fix Email Bug
I previously reported on a bug in iOS 4.2.1 that I experienced on an iphone 3GS where the phone would repeatedly display a confirmation dialog before it would send email through a server with a self-signed certificate. Apparently the bug plagued users trying to use Microsoft Exchange for their corporate email as well. This bug could also cause the phone to launch a mini denial of service attack, where it would rapidly send 400 copies of the same email.
I’ve just upgraded to iOS 4.3 and sent several emails from the phone, including emailing a link from Safari, using the interface that led previously to the storm of 400 emails. It put up the confirmation dialog for the first email, which is normal, and sent the other emails, including the Safari link, without putting up the dialog again. So I’m hoping that this bug is actually fixed, and keeping the digits crossed. I have searched for actual release notes for 4.3, but can’t find any; just a vague reference to “bug fixes.” Does Apple publish real release notes?
Update: 22 March 2011: After 12 days of daily use I am happy to report that the phone has not nagged me once about the server certificate. Yay.
Update: 10 May 2011: I’m sorry to report that, after trying to email myself another Safari bookmark, I received about 170 copies of the email. This has happened only once so far after upgrading to 4.3, but shows that there is still a serious bug either in Safari or in the phone’s email infrastructure. I haven’t tried 4.3.3 yet. In better news, still no nagging about the self-signed certificate.
