“Hitler” Clothing Store

Travelers to India can see the swastika adorning all kinds of buildings, from banks to temples. Many of these structures predate the adoption of the ancient symbol by the Nazis; some of them predate Germany.

But not always.

There is a clothing shop in Gujarat called “Hitler;” the “i” of the name is dotted with a swastika. Here it’s pretty clear what the symbol is supposed to remind us of.

There has been controversy; the sign is, probably, coming down.

The store’s proprietors claim not to know much about “the” Hitler. It is named in honor of a grandfather of one of the owners, who was nicknamed Hitler “because of his strict nature.”
