[Tb] Newbie question about childLinks

I'm learning how to use Tinderbox 2.1 and have what may be a very
obvious question:

How do I get childLinks to work? Both siblings and ancestors work fine,
but I can't get a list of links to children of a note to
appear...^childLinks or ^childLinks( "<ul>", "<li>", <"/li">, "</ul>" )
does exactly nothing.

And is Tinderbox meant to crash on HTML export if a note is at the root
level? Is there something I'm doing wrong to make it happen?
